🧩 How to Disable Chrome Extensions

Updated over a week ago

Here are step-by-step instructions for disabling Chrome extensions:

Method 1: Using the Extensions Menu (Quickest)

  1. Open Google Chrome

  2. Click the puzzle piece icon in the top-right corner of the browser (next to your profile picture)

  3. Find the extension you want to disable

  4. Click the three-dot menu (⋮) next to the extension name

  5. Select Manage extension

  6. Toggle the switch to Off (it will turn from blue to gray)

Method 2: Through Chrome Settings

  1. Open Google Chrome

  2. Click the three-dot menu (⋮) in the top-right corner

  3. Hover over Extensions

  4. Click Manage Extensions

    • Or type chrome://extensions in the address bar and press Enter

  5. Find the extension you want to disable

  6. Toggle the switch next to the extension to Off

Method 3: Disable All Extensions at Once (Troubleshooting)

  1. Close Chrome completely

  2. Right-click the Chrome shortcut on your desktop (or find it in your applications)

  3. Select Properties (Windows) or Get Info (Mac)

  4. In the Target field (Windows), add --disable-extensions at the end

    • Example: "C:\Program Files\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" --disable-extensions

  5. Click Apply then OK

  6. Launch Chrome using this shortcut

Note: This method temporarily disables all extensions for that session only.

To Re-Enable an Extension:

  1. Follow the same steps to access the Extensions page

  2. Toggle the switch back to On (it will turn blue)

To Completely Remove an Extension:

  1. Go to the Extensions page (chrome://extensions)

  2. Find the extension

  3. Click Remove

  4. Confirm by clicking Remove again in the popup

Troubleshooting:

  • If you can't find the puzzle piece icon, it may be hidden. Click the three-dot menu > Extensions > Manage Extensions

  • Some extensions may require you to restart Chrome after disabling

  • Corporate or school-managed Chrome browsers may restrict extension management
